We put “T-Shirt” out next…

And we released it on Christmas

“T-Shirt” was the second song Morris and I produced and released.

At this point, we were becoming a dynamic duo. After “Butterflies,” I realized I could produce more of what I had written, and “T-Shirt” seemed like the apparent next release. I wrote “T-Shirt” a couple of years after “Butterflies,” but it was also written at camp.

Morris and I decided to explore the range of synths and effects we had access to, and we enjoyed using this song to familiarize ourselves further with audio production.

“T-Shirt” is unique in that it is more ethereal than my other songs. The song was created to feel like a lullaby or a weighted blanket, contrasting with its message. At its core, “T-Shirt” is a breakup song written about a relationship that perhaps never existed. As we produced the song, we tried to emphasize the reverb of my vocal tracks and have that reflect in the instrumental track, creating what sort of sounds like a fuzzy echo chamber. Mind you, we were 16-year-olds trying to do what many people work a lifetime at. But, all things considered, I think we did a pretty good job.

Lyrics!

Verse 1:

I have your T-shirt

I know everyone has one

But it means more to me than just a piece of fabric

It’s the best summer of my life

It’s the reason I stay up at night

Chorus:

Cause I’m wearing your T-shirt

I’m not trying to be dramatic

But I just can’t seem to bring myself to burn it

I’m wearing your T-shirt

I don’t wanna take it off now

But at some point, I’m gonna have to wash you out

Verse 2:

There’s a part of me that hates it

Seeing you in my closet

And the other part of me never wants to take it off

Cause you were my person

You made me smile

Now I just can’t seem to stop crying

Chorus:

Cause I’m wearing your T-shirt

I’m not trying to be dramatic

But I just can’t seem to bring myself to burn it

I’m wearing your T-shirt

I don’t wanna take it off now

But at some point, I’m gonna have to wash you out

Bridge:

Oh this t-shirt

Yeah, it’s fraying at the seams (at the seams)

And I can’t sew it back to what it means (what it means)

Cause we had a good run

And now it’s all gone

Guess I’ll just keep moving on

Refrain:

I have your T-shirt

I know everyone has one

But it means more to me than just a piece of fabric

It’s the best summer of my life

It’s the reason I stay up at night
